Release Notes
The independent Cooley distillery started in 1989 producing malt and grain whiskeys in Dundalk near the Northern Ireland border. This, produced in pot stills with peated barley, is the authentic taste of traditional Irish whiskey, offered here without the blarney.
Murray McDavid
A few things that make this bottling so very special: a) it was matured for a period of time in Islay, obtaining a unique briny quality b) it is bottled at 46% alcohol content instead of the usual 40-43% c) it is unchillfiltered and coloring free as all Murray McDavid bottlings are. This is the true authentic Irish whiskey taste at its finest.

The range is intentionally small, less than 10 bottlings at a time, selected from distilleries which produce great whiskies, rather than simply distilleries having a well known name.
The "Mission Gold" Range is a collection of some of the oldest and rarer casks in Murray McDavid cellars , chosen for their out standing quality and uniqueness.
Some of these whiskies are selected for further refinement with a period of Additional Cask Evolution (ACE"d) on Islay in European Oak wine casks such as Chateau Lafite, Chateau Margaux, Chateau d"Yquem,
All bottlings are with Islay Spring water, bottled at the Bruichladdich distillery. they never add any colouring, nor do they chill filter
The company is named after Mark Reynier"s grand parents, Harriet Murray and Jock McDavid, Unlike other Independent bottlers, Murray McDavid hasn"t a blenders tradition to follow, bottling only single malts instead of blends.
With Mark Reynier, third generation wine merchant, Murray McDavid has taken several aspects from the wine industry in the preparation of their bottlings, for example always tasting each individual cask, then creating a collection of several casks from the same distillation to create consistency and maximise complexity. Gordon Wright was the only one of the founders with experience in the whisky world.
Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright founded Murray McDavid in 1996.
Murray McDavid became a major investor in Bruichladdich distillery on Islay around 2000 when they purchased the distillery from JBB/Whyte & Mackay via a consortium of 25 different shareholders that operated under the name "Bruichladdich Distillery Co. Ltd.".

In 2013 Murray McDavid was acquired by Scotch services company Aceo Ltd.

What makes Cooley"s whiskey distillery distinctive is their use of small copper pot stills with very large necks. These cause the spirits to take 50 percent longer to pass through, and the distillers believe that the result is a more refined product. In addition, many Cooley brand whiskeys are distilled only twice as opposed to the more common Irish method of distilling the spirits three times. This gives Cooley"s products much more flavor than most Irish whiskeys. The whiskeys are matured in the 200 year old granite warehouses of Kilbeggan Distillery located in County Westmeath, some 60 miles away.
Cooley produces malt, grain, and blended whiskeys, as well as producing whiskey"s for other companies to brand, market and sell.
The distillery uses only Irish barley and has its own spring water source coming from the Sliabh na Gloch river high up in the Cooley Mountains.
The distillery produces Kilbeggan and Lockes whiskeys, as well as Connemara single malt, Ireland"s only peated single malt whiskey, Tyrconnell single malt and Greenore, Ireland"s oldest single grain whiskey. Other products include Michael Collins single malt, and a Michael Collins blended version. Cooley is the distillery that produces Origine Irish Whiskey sold in the US at Albertson Supermarkets.
Cooley Distillery is the only independent, Irish-owned whiskey distillery in Ireland, converted in 1987 from an older industrial potato ethanol plant by John Teeling. The Distillery is located on the Cooley Peninsula in County Louth on Ireland"s east coast.
Trivia:
  • Cooley"s products have won over 100 awards in the past ten years, including gold medals at all the top spirit competitions.
  • Cooley was the first Irish distillery awarded for outstanding contribution to the spirits industry in the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
