Release Notes
The first release from Skye's first new distillery in over 190 years. Only the second legal distillery to operate on the gorgeous Isle on the western coast of Scotland, the first drops of spirit filled barrels here in January of 2017. The most difficult part of creating a new single malt is developing the house style, a characteristic that is the result of both art and science. Their goal was to create a distinctive character that capture the wonderous surroundings. After many trials, they settled on a heavily peated style that prioritizes richness and balance over power. Distilled from 100% concerto barley peated to between 55-60 ppm phenol. Fermentation was completed with Pinnacle MG+ yeast and the malt spirit was filled into first fill ex-bourbon barrels. Bottled without chill-filtration or coloring at an approachable 92 proof, the final phenol in the bottled spirits is 16 ppm. This limited release consists of just 100 barrels that were distilled in the very first few months of operations. Just 1000 cases of this unique expression were exported to the United States and a mere 100 cases were allocated for the California Market. This will be a telling sign of the potential this new distillery has to offer the malt loving community and certainly stands up nicely to many of the other young malts on the market today.

3rd Party Tasting Notes
Smoke & brine. A robustly peated spirit with a deceptively refined character, resulting in a complex and characterful maritime whisky.

The Distillery at Torabhaig is the second ever licenced Single Malt Scotch Whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye. The Excise Act of 1823 first sanctioned legal whisky distilling in Scotland almost 200 years ago, with the first licence on Skye being granted not long thereafter, so one could say it was about time.

Single Malt Scotch Whisky is inextricably linked to its place of origin, perhaps more so than any other product. The water, the land, the climate, all play a role in the character of the whisky. All these factors are also vitally important in planning a new distillery. Simply put, you cannot just build a distillery anywhere.

Some time ago, we identified the old farmstead at Torabhaig as the perfect location for a small, traditional distillery. All the factors needed to make good, robust island whisky were in place, right down to the Allt Breacach and the Allt Gleann, the burns that feed us with the purest island spring water. We were also fortunate to start with a handsome, rugged building, rich in history and local lore. 200 years or so ago, the stone that forms this building was hauled up from the ruined castle in the bay, by horse and cart. Men toiled from dawn till dusk building this Steading which was to stand the test of time for the next 150 years or so until farming practices changed.

Our 19th century building has now been fully restored to hold the gorgeous copper stills and traditional wooden washbacks that should allow us to produce whisky here for the next two hundred years, we have even built in a roof we can remove so that in time the pot stills can be replaced without disturbing the old building again.

After a painstaking 4-year restoration and build, Torabhaig has been a fully operational Single Malt Scotch Whisky distillery since January 2017, the second ever on the Isle of Skye.

We are a young company, but our roots run deep. The first bottling under the Mossburn name was released in 2017 as a range of classic Independent Bottler Malts. In the nearly three decades prior, the team developed and honed its skills in blending and bottling whiskies and a variety of other spirits. Their combined experience spans generations, with over a century of continuous family history in the Scotch Whisky industry.

As we move into the next era of our development, we will add our own exceptional Single Malt Scotch Whiskies created in distilleries we’ve built ourselves.

The Distillery At Torabhaig: On the Isle of Skye. In operation since January 2017, the distillery is our first fully operational producer of Single Malt Scotch Whisky and only the second ever legal distillery on the island. Torabhaig produces an extremely characterful, peated new-make spirit, which is currently maturing in a variety of casks.

Reivers Distillery: Our second distillery is located in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Designed to be much more innovative and experimental, Reivers will produce its first Single Grain Scotch Whiskies in 2020. Torabhaig and Reivers are poles apart, sitting at opposite ends of the whisky-making spectrum. But they are united in a common goal: to make something new, noteworthy and bring something unique to the table.
